Profile

Dr Ian Harrison is a consultant psychiatrist with expertise in perinatal psychiatry, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and psychotherapy. Ian has been in private practice in Sydney's Macquarie Street since 1991.

Ian graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sydney in 1984. Following his intern and resident years he commenced specialty training in Psychiatry and completed his 5th and final year of Psychiatry training in 1990 as a Senior Registrar at the Mood Disorders Unit and the Eating Disorders Unit at the Prince Henry/Prince of Wales Hospitals. Ian's final year dissertation was entitled The Psychotherapy of Depression: An Outline and Comparison of Four Models. This dissertation compared Psychoanalytic, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy and Systemic/Family/Marital Therapy in the treatment of depression.

In February 1991, Ian was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

In 1993 Ian completed a 3 year Master's Degree in Psychotherapy at the University of NSW. This course included training and supervision in insight-oriented, psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapies as well as self-psychology, systems and family therapies and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Ian's dissertation was entitled Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Treatment of Depression. Throughout the course and for a number of years afterwards Ian continued in individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy supervision with a senior psychoanalyst.

Ian developed an interest in Perinatal Psychiatry and Infant Mental Health and in 2002 he completed a Graduate Diploma in Infant Mental Health at the NSW Institute of Psychiatry.

In 2002, Ian was appointed the Visiting Perinatal Psychiatrist at the Karitane Mothercraft Residential Unit. Ian continued in that role until mid 2016 spending each Wednesday consulting with staff and clients at the Karitane Residential Unit. Over that time Ian assessed and treated more than 1500 women suffering from postnatal depression or anxiety. From 2002 to 2006 Ian worked 2 days per week as a Senior Perinatal Psychiatrist for the Sydney South Western Area Health Service and was involved in implementing their universal midwifery psychosocial screening and early intervention program. During this time he supervised therapists involved in a home visiting program focusing on disadvantaged/at risk pregnant women (and partners).

Ian has also trained in Clinical Hypnosis and has completed the Professional Development Certificate in Evidenced Based Executive Coaching and the Advanced Certificate in Evidenced Based Executive Coaching.

Ian was the Coordinator of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (NSW Branch) Perinatal and Infant Psychiatry Special Interest Group (PIPSIG) (2008-12). Ian is also a Past President of the NSW Branch of AAIMHI (Australian Association for Infant Mental Health Inc.)

Ian has presented at perinatal conferences and GP education days and is involved in ongoing peer review with psychiatrist colleagues.
